Milky Way Panorama Astrophotography

There are couple of Milky Way panoramas which I did previously. There are Milky Way Rainbow from West and East of North America, Panorama in South America Chile and Milky Way Bow in Equator Galapagos. The photos of panoramas done during of couple of years. All places have best dark sky on Earth, photos were done during new moon. I used about the same technology – about 20-30 photos for one panorama. It took about 30 – 40 minutes (one photo was about 30 second, Canon 60Da with Canon Lens EF16-35mm, F/2.8). For post processing I used Photoshop to stitch all photos to one panorama. Challenge were that it was new places, when I never bean before, and very limited time.

This is panorama of 40 images which were done during my trip to Arches National Park. I really like this trip, and I believe that   Arches National Park is one of the best place for landscape astrophotography. It is paradise for astrophotography – really dark sky (during new moon) and fantastic landscaping.

While Mount Desert Island is not heavily populated and is remote, but some light pollution exists. So, some places in Acadia National Park are just with good dark sky. But some places are having amazing sky! Sand Beach, while just a 290-yard-long beach inlet between granite mountains, has a spectacular view of the night sky. On the Bortle Dark-Sky Scale, this place has “Class 1” (out of 9) is absolutely, naturally dark — the darkest skies on Earth!

Not so much were changes on Galapagos Islands during last 3 millions years!

The marine iguana (Amblyrhynchus cristatus), also known as the sea iguana, saltwater iguana, or Galapagos marine iguana, is a species of iguana found only on the Galápagos Islands (Ecuador) that has the ability, unique among modern lizards, to forage in the sea, making it a marine reptile.

Milky Way casting shadows – for all my live don’t see many times. Need very dark sky, no moon, no light pollution. Also, when doing the photo of Milky Way panorama, I usually add extra light to see landscape. This was exception. Very dark sky – Chile Atacama Desert has one of the best skies for observation. On the astronomical tour had one request – no light. Location is desert oasis with trees. Scorpius and Sagittarius and Jupiter are close to zenith. As result on the photo you can see diffuse shadows from trees casing by Milky Way. Really, there is the place where the Milky Way casts a shadow!

This is my first photo of Milky Way Rainbow with Canon EOS Ra. I am continue testing Canon Ra astrophotography camera. Canon Ra has High ISO performance with reasonable low noise levels (Topaz DeNoise AI allow minimize noise level). So even 5 sec photos with ISO 20,000 gives very nice result for night landscaping. Because of 5 sec shots – photo time is pretty fast. Special filter gives good contrast for Milky Way. Photoshop allows combine all 20 photos to one Milky Way rainbow panorama.

The photo captures a view of the night sky over the Bolivia. 2 hours after sunset (elevation: 4020 m / 13190 feet). Canon EOS 60Da, 25 sec., Canon Lens EF16-35mm, f/2.8, ISO 6400, panorama of 20 images. 

Because our eyes are less sensitive to color in low light conditions, a black and white photo more closely approximates what our eyes can see at night (compared to a color photo).

The black and white photography highlights the stark contrast between the dark night sky and the glowing band of the Milky Way. The Milky Way, a dense band of stars and interstellar dust, stretches across the sky in a white arc. 

If you look closely, you can also see a faint, diffuse glow stretching up from the horizon. This is the Zodiacal Light, a ghostly band of light caused by sunlight reflecting off interplanetary dust particles in our solar system. 

Taken together, the Milky Way and Zodiacal Light create a breathtaking scene that reminds us of the immense scale and beauty of the universe we inhabit. It is a testament to the power of nature and the wonders that can be discovered by simply looking up at the night sky.

The photo of the Milky Way and Zodiacal Light is an example of the beauty that can be found in the natural world. It is a reminder that there is always more to discover and explore, both here on Earth and beyond.

Arches National Park Astrophotography

I continue my astrophotography travels to compare how the night sky appears from different places around the world. The constellations are the same everywhere, yet the sky always looks different depending on latitude, landscape, and atmosphere. These images were captured during my trip to Arches National Park in Utah.

Arches National Park is home to more than 2,000 natural stone arches, along with countless surreal rock formations. Even during the day, the landscape feels almost unreal — but at night it becomes truly extraordinary. Under dark, moonless skies, Arches reveals vivid airglow, subtle star colors, and an astonishingly rich Milky Way. Green, red, and faint spectral hues paint the sky, creating dramatic and colorful night landscapes that feel almost otherworldly.

With its minimal light pollution, unique foregrounds, and clear desert air, Arches National Park ranks among the best locations in the world for astrophotography and night landscape photography.

Sailing the Milky Way.
We are all traveling together on a small spaceship called Earth, sailing through the Milky Way across space and time. This photograph is a visual metaphor for that idea — our planet moving silently beneath a rotating galaxy.

Stairway to Heaven.
The rising rock formations feel like steps leading upward, not through space, but through time. As the Milky Way arches overhead, the Earth quietly turns beneath our feet, carrying us higher along this cosmic staircase. This image is a reminder that even while standing still, we are always moving — upward, forward, and deeper into the universe.

Balanced Rock.
Balanced Rock is one of the most iconic landmarks of Arches National Park and a striking example of erosion at work. It is hard to understand how such a massive stone remains standing in perfect balance. Even in daylight it feels unreal — but at night, beneath the Milky Way, it becomes truly extraordinary.

Airglow Silhouette.
Balanced Rock appears as a pure silhouette, a dark stencil cut against the glowing night sky. Green-yellow airglow fills the background, while thin dark clouds add another layer of contrast. The result is a natural blend of night landscape and cosmic stencil art.

And finally there are photos of arches.

Turret Arch and the Milky Way.
Turret Arch frames the glowing core of the Milky Way, creating a shape that almost feels like a cosmic “smoking gun.” I think on this picture we see evidence of ... Big Bang :) The illusion is playful, not literal — a reminder of how natural forms and deep space can echo one another. Moments like this are what make night landscape astrophotography both thoughtful and fun.

Windows Arches to the Starry Sky.
The North and South Window Arches frame the starry sky like natural windows. While the rock remains fixed and ancient, the stars continue their slow motion across the night. This contrast gives the scene both stillness and movement.

Double Arch and the Milky Way.
The Milky Way rises above Double Arch, one of the most recognizable formations in Arches National Park. While the sandstone arches remain fixed and ancient, the star-filled sky continues its slow motion overhead. The image brings together geological time and cosmic time in a single night landscape.

Arch over Arches.
A panoramic view turns the Milky Way itself into a luminous arch, stretching across the sky above Double Arch. Stone arches shaped by erosion and a cosmic arch shaped by perspective mirror one another in a single frame. It is a quiet alignment of geology and galaxy — an arch over arches.

Utah Astrophotography

Utah is one of the best places in the world for landscape astrophotography. Bryce Canyon National Park offers exceptionally dark skies, dramatic rock formations, high elevation, and some of the most unforgettable Milky Way views in the United States.

All photos in this post were taken during my trip to Utah, mostly around Bryce Canyon National Park, under very dark, crystal-clear skies with strong natural airglow.

This image captures a lonely Utah road under one of the darkest skies in the United States. A bright Left Turn road sign stands illuminated in the foreground, leading the viewer’s eye toward the distant mountains and the dramatic rise of the Milky Way. Eruption of the Milky Way Over Utah Mountains

This photo is a zoomed-in view of the previous scene, focusing entirely on the mountains and the glowing rise of the Milky Way. Without the road and sign, the composition becomes even more dramatic — the landscape looks like a dark silhouette beneath an explosive burst of galactic light. The bright Galactic Core appears almost like a cosmic eruption, with dense star clusters and dusty nebulae rising vertically from behind the mountains. Subtle airglow adds a soft glow along the horizon, making the scene feel like it is from another planet.

Night Parking Under the Milky Way

This image captures a quiet night parking area in Utah, illuminated softly by a few scattered lights, with cars resting under the sky. Even with the artificial lighting, the location is so dark and pristine that the Milky Way remains fully visible above the trees, stretching brightly across the night. The gentle glow from the parking lot barely affects the sky — a rare reminder of how extraordinary Utah’s natural darkness truly is.

With the silhouettes of trees framing the scene and the Galactic Core rising above the parked cars, the photo blends everyday elements with the cosmic grandeur of the Milky Way, turning a simple parking lot into a stunning nightscape.

Big Dipper, Small Dipper and Natural Airglow

This photo focuses on two of the most iconic northern constellations — the Big Dipper prominently centered in the frame, and the Small Dipper (Ursa Minor) appearing in the upper-right corner. Together, they form one of the best natural guides for finding true north in the night sky.

The two stars at the edge of the Big Dipper’s bowl — Merak and Dubhe — point directly toward Polaris, the North Star, which anchors the end of the Small Dipper’s handle. Even without labels, you can clearly see how the geometry of the sky reveals direction.

The scene is framed by the silhouettes of trees, and a gentle layer of green and red airglow adds soft, natural color to the background. It’s a beautiful combination of astronomy and landscape — a quiet Utah night where celestial navigation and atmospheric glow meet in a perfect astrophotography moment.

Astronomy Rangers Night Sky Program at Bryce Canyon

This photo captures a beautiful moment during the night astronomy program at Bryce Canyon National Park. In the foreground, a telescope stands ready as visitors gather around it, waiting for their turn to look through the eyepiece guided by the park’s Astronomy Rangers. Soft red lights illuminate the area — specially used to preserve night vision during stargazing events — creating a warm glow against the darkness. Behind the viewing area, a small building and the dim outline of the road can be seen, while the surrounding trees frame the scene. Above it all rises the spectacular Milky Way, arching brightly across the sky and reminding everyone why Bryce Canyon is one of the premier dark-sky locations in the world.

Martian Landscape from Bryce Canyon

This single frame from my larger Bryce Canyon panorama focuses tightly on the brightest and most dramatic region of the Milky Way — the galactic center. The rugged hoodoos and canyon walls glow with warm, earthy tones, creating a landscape that looks almost extraterrestrial, as if photographed on Mars rather than Utah. The towering cliffs and formations rise into the night, illuminated subtly by starlight, while the dense core of our galaxy burns overhead in deep gold and orange hues. This combination of Bryce Canyon’s unique geology and the immense Milky Way shining above produces a surreal, otherworldly scene that feels like a gateway to another planet.

Milky Road – Dark Dust Lanes in the Galactic Plane

This single-frame capture reveals the Milky Way rising without any foreground landscape, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the complex structure of our galaxy. The darker central band — often called the “Great Rift” — is clearly visible as thick clouds of interstellar dust and gas absorb the light from millions of stars behind them. This natural dark lane creates the illusion of a cosmic “road” stretching upward through the sky, giving the image its fitting name: Milky Road. Even without the canyon scenery, the depth, contrast, and clarity of the galactic core make this one of the most dramatic astro-portraits of the night sky.

Utah Backyard Astrophotography – Milky Way Over the Fence

This final photo was taken right from the backyard of the house where we stayed for the night. The scene includes the wooden fence, trees, grass, and a few small backyard details illuminated by nearby light — ordinary objects that become magical under Utah’s incredible dark sky.

Above this quiet backyard, the Milky Way rises in full brightness, stretching across the sky like a glowing river of stars. Even far from the national park viewpoints, Utah’s night sky remains phenomenally dark and clear. The strong Milky Way structure, with its dust lanes and bright core, shows how little light pollution there is in this region.

It’s a reminder that breathtaking astrophotography does not always require a dramatic landscape — sometimes an ordinary backyard becomes extraordinary when the galaxy appears right overhead.

Canon 60Da Milky Way Astrophotography Catskill Mountains Upstate NY New York

Two simple, minimalistic Milky Way images from my first nights testing the Canon 60Da in the Catskills.
Even single exposures showed a huge improvement over my old Canon 40D.

During my early tests with the Canon EOS 60Da in the Catskill Mountains, I captured two very simple single-frame Milky Way images. Both were taken with the Canon EF 16–35mm f/2.8L II USM using only a fixed tripod. Even without stacking, the 60Da immediately revealed more detail and sensitivity than my older Canon 40D.

These photos became some of my favorite early 60Da shots—minimalistic, quiet, and very natural-looking. Sometimes a single exposure tells the story better than a complex stacked image.

This first image became unintentionally philosophical. In the lower part of the frame you can see the roof of the bungalow where we stayed in the Catskills. Just above it, the Milky Way rises perfectly—almost as if it starts right from the roof. A small tree is visible on the bottom-right, and the entire scene is extremely minimalistic.

Camera settings were: 9 sec, f/2.8, ISO 12800 using the Canon 60Da and an ultra-wide 16–35mm lens.

The second image shows a large tree in silhouette with the Milky Way rising directly above it. Another very simple and minimalistic frame. It beautifully demonstrates how much more detail the Canon 60Da can capture compared to the older Canon 40D—more stars, better color, and higher contrast in the Milky Way core.

This exposure was slightly longer: 15 sec, Canon EOS 60Da, Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Ultra Wide Angle Lens, F2.8, ISO 12800.

These two early Canon 60Da images became part of two small “visual stories” in my astrophotography. The first story is about the question “Where does the Milky Way come from?” — in the Catskills it seems to rise straight from the roof of our bungalow, and later in Yellowstone it appears to rise from the Old Faithful geyser. Two completely different landscapes, but the same cosmic river flowing upward.

The second story is about trees and stars. The tree in this Catskills image became the first part of a theme I continued years later in Bethel, New York — capturing another tree under the Milky Way and reflecting on the idea that we have more trees on Earth than stars in our galaxy. A simple comparison, but very beautiful in astrophotography.

Milky Way Casting Shadows - Chile Astrophotography - San Pedro de Atacama Celestial Explorations Star Tour

We all know that the Sun and the Moon cast shadows. But can the Milky Way itself be bright enough to do the same? In extremely dark locations, the answer is yes.

This panorama was captured during the San Pedro de Atacama Celestial Explorations Star Tour in northern Chile. On the image you can clearly see shadows of the trees cast only by the Milky Way — something that is possible only under the darkest skies on Earth.

According to the Bortle Scale of night-sky brightness, this region rates as a Class 1 – Excellent Dark-Sky Site. Here, the Scorpius–Sagittarius region of the Milky Way is so bright that it produces detectable diffuse shadows on the ground. It is an extremely rare and unforgettable sight.

For observers hoping to witness Milky Way shadows themselves, sky conditions matter as much as sky darkness. A Bortle Class 1 site is essential, but it is usually not sufficient on its own. The Galactic Center, located in the Scorpius–Sagittarius region, must be well above the horizon, where the Milky Way’s surface brightness reaches its maximum.

Shadows are not produced by individual stars, but by the combined light of billions of stars concentrated toward the Galactic Core. When this region is high in the sky and atmospheric extinction is minimal, the Milky Way can generate subtle but detectable contrast between illuminated and shaded areas on the ground.

The effect becomes even more noticeable when a bright planet such as Jupiter is present near the Milky Way, subtly reinforcing the overall illumination. Only when these conditions align — a true Bortle Class 1 sky, the Milky Way core high above the horizon, and additional planetary light — do Milky Way shadows become realistically observable.

Near the horizon, green and red airglow is visible — a natural atmospheric luminescence often seen in extremely dark locations. The brightest “star” in the middle of the panorama is actually Jupiter.

This photograph was captured in the Atacama Desert, Chile—one of the premier astrophotography locations on the planet. Many of the world’s leading observatories operate here (the other major hub is Hawai‘i’s Mauna Kea).

The image was taken near a small oasis where a few trees are present. It is astonishing to stand in near-total natural darkness and see shadows cast not by any artificial light, but by the bright central bulge of the Milky Way and the planet Jupiter.

This is what a true Bortle Class 1 sky looks like — the very definition of a perfect dark-sky environment.

Experiences like this reveal the Milky Way not as a distant backdrop, but as a luminous structure capable of shaping the landscape itself — a reminder of what the natural night sky can truly be.

Rainbow Milky Way Joshua Tree National Park

This image represents a large-scale panoramic Milky Way photograph captured at Joshua Tree National Park.

The final image is a wide-field panorama composed of 40 individual exposures, stitched together to reveal the full Milky Way arch stretching across the desert sky. This post focuses on the panoramic process itself — showing the individual frames, the intermediate stitched result, and how the final image was formed.

Below are examples of individual frames used to build the panorama. Each image captures only a small section of the sky, but together they form the complete Milky Way arch.

After capturing all frames, I used Photoshop → File → Automate → Photomerge to stitch the images into a single panorama.

At this stage, the Milky Way arch was complete, but the horizon appeared noticeably curved — a common effect of automated panorama stitching. The software prioritizes smooth blending between frames, often at the expense of geometric realism.

In the final step, I manually corrected and leveled the horizon in Photoshop using Select → All followed by Edit → Transform → Warp, while preserving the true curvature of the Milky Way. This transformation turned the temporary stitched image into the final panoramic photograph shown at the top of the post — closely matching how the scene appeared under the dark skies of Joshua Tree National Park.

Southern Hemisphere Astrophotography

If you have only observed the stars of the Northern Hemisphere and have never seen the southern night sky, then you have only seen part of the story. The Southern Hemisphere sky offers a different and in many ways richer view of the universe, with features that are either difficult or impossible to see from northern latitudes.

Among the most famous southern sky objects are the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Small Magellanic Cloud, two nearby irregular dwarf galaxies visible to the unaided eye under dark skies. The southern sky also contains the Southern Cross (Crux), the brilliant stars Alpha and Beta Centauri, and some of the brightest and most detailed sections of the Milky Way.

This post shows several examples of my Southern Hemisphere astrophotography from Bolivia and Chile, where the high altitude and very dark skies reveal an extraordinary amount of detail.

One of the most unforgettable sights in the southern sky is the view of the Magellanic Clouds.

This photo was taken in Bolivia near Hotel Tayka del Desierto, Ojo de Perdiz, at an altitude of about 4,600 meters (15,000 feet). It shows the southern night sky with the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds and a reddish glow near the horizon caused by airglow.

The two cloud-like patches of light are the neighbouring galaxies known as the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Small Magellanic Cloud. They are among the closest galaxies to our own Milky Way and are a spectacular sight with the naked eye, binoculars, or a telescope. For an observer from the Northern Hemisphere, seeing them for the first time is one of the most memorable experiences in astronomy.

Another remarkable feature of the southern sky is the combination of the Southern Cross, Alpha Centauri, Beta Centauri, and the bright southern Milky Way.

This part of the southern sky contains some of the most beautiful wide-angle targets for nightscape astrophotography. The dense Milky Way star fields, bright southern constellations, and nearby galaxies make the view especially impressive under dark skies.

The next image shows part of a Milky Way panorama, where different colors of the night sky are also visible.

Under very dark conditions, the southern sky reveals not only rich Milky Way structure but also subtle natural atmospheric colors. These tones can include reddish and greenish airglow, adding even more beauty to the panorama.

In this panorama I intentionally did not keep the horizon flat. I used a middle position where the Milky Way looks almost like a straight line, while the horizon becomes curved. This gives a stronger panoramic effect and better shows the scale of the southern night sky.

For anyone interested in astronomy or astrophotography, traveling south opens a completely different view of the universe. The Magellanic Clouds, Southern Cross, Centauri stars, and the brilliant southern Milky Way make the Southern Hemisphere night sky one of the most rewarding sights on Earth.

Milky Way Yosemite Park Canon EF 16-35mm f 2.8L II USM

Yosemite National Park is one of the most iconic locations in the United States for night-sky photography. With its dramatic granite cliffs, deep valleys, and high-elevation viewpoints, Yosemite offers exceptional dark skies that reveal the Milky Way in stunning detail. These photographs were taken at night during an astronomical lecture, when a brief window of clear sky allowed for perfect conditions to capture the stars above the landscape.

All images on this page were made with a Canon 40D and the Canon EF 16–35mm f/2.8L II USM ultra-wide angle lens. Exposures were ISO 1600 and 30 seconds, a balance that gathers enough light while keeping stars sharp at wide focal lengths. Despite the older camera body, the combination of dark skies and a fast f/2.8 lens delivered detailed views of the Milky Way, forest silhouettes, mountains, and even the Andromeda Galaxy in a single frame.

Yosemite is far from major cities, and its high-altitude viewpoints can offer remarkably clear and dark conditions. On nights like this, the Milky Way becomes fully visible—from the bright, dramatic region near the center of our galaxy to the faint dust lanes stretching across the sky. These photographs capture that rare clarity, including a straight-band Milky Way panorama and multiple compositions showing how the galaxy interacts with Yosemite’s unique landscape.

This Yosemite session shows how much can be done with a DSLR like the Canon 40D and a fast ultra-wide lens when the sky is dark and clear. The combination of dramatic landscape and a bright Milky Way makes Yosemite National Park one of my favorite places for night-sky photography.

Different types of the Milky Way Night Landscape - Stair Sail and Arch

Let me introduce a new (and completely humorous!) classification of the Milky Way. No, I am not serious — there is only one Milky Way galaxy — but give me a chance! Just look at the collage below: three very different shapes of the galactic core captured in a single night.

I call them the Stair, the Sail, and the Arch Milky Way. All three photos were taken in the same location — Park Avenue, Arches National Park — during the same night. Only small changes in viewpoint and composition, yet the Milky Way looks completely different!

This is part of my light-hearted series Astronomical Jokes, where I play with perspective and imagination. People love to classify everything they see, and sometimes those classifications become fun in themselves.

As the astronomer Olin Eggen playfully said:
“Classification is a tool for understanding — and occasionally for amusement.”
And the statistician George Box famously reminded us:
“All models are wrong, but some are useful.”
My “Milky Way types” are definitely wrong — but they are useful for a smile.

This collage shows how dramatically the Milky Way’s appearance changes depending on camera angle, foreground, and the rising position of the galactic core. Even though the galaxy is constant, our perspective makes it look like different “types.”

I hope this light-hearted classification brings a smile — and perhaps inspires you to try your own creative Milky Way “types” on the next clear night!
